The Real Story
We live in a world with much information, and we need more insight. The real estate business is filled with conferences, panels, and events where players discuss the market. Often you hear the same hackneyed market statements. Sometimes, someone will share a personal story or an unexpected event that brought them success. This is where the real value is found, and, personally, I’d like to hear more of it.
In my day-to-day conversations with NYC building owners, we talk about their stories and the unexpected. It’s these encounters that are shared on my podcast, Behind the Bricks.
Far from the stereotypes, many NYC real estate owners started with nothing and built their fortunes from nothing. These stories are golden. They remind me of a phrase I love: “Standing on the shoulders of giants.” All humanity is standing upon the achievements and creations of those giants who have created before us. Let’s celebrate them.
Listening to Behind the Bricks, you will get tactical NYC real estate market knowledge and actionable perspectives on the market. But possibly, more importantly, you will hear about the achievements, failures, creativity, mistakes, philosophies, and mindsets that these entrepreneurs bring to the table.
Why Make ‘Behind the Bricks’ a Podcast?
As a leader of the top mid-market multifamily sales team in NYC, a podcast allows me to better spread the word about opportunities, ideas, and trends in NYC real estate. A large portion (40%+) of the money buying NYC buildings originates from overseas and outside of the local market. This podcast is a way for me to connect with those I can’t see face-to-face.
Transforming “Downtime” to “Learning-Time”
For a little more background, I first became interested in this idea a few years ago when I became a podcast listener myself. I had moved to the NYC suburbs and now had an hour-long commute (My previous commute was a 13-minute walk).
Fellow commuters would bemoan and complain to me about the inconvenience and hassle of commuting. I wanted to turn on its head so it actually became a quality of life improvement. I wondered if it was possible to make the time so useful that it became a multiplier, allowing me to improve my business and personal life. The answer was yes. With an iPhone, my commute became one of the most productive periods of my day.
As we all learned when Ted Talks became available, with a smartphone in your hand, all the knowledge in the world is available to you if you are willing to search it out. I had transformed a period of time that could have been a waste into something that created value. Slowly, the idea for ‘Behind the Bricks’ evolved.

I recently heard the phrase “a story not shared is an opportunity lost.” As a successful NYC real estate owner, you have learned, overcome, created, solved, and developed useful viewpoints on investing, life, and the world. There are many listeners who can benefit from hearing your story. These experiences and qualities are a big part of what has made you successful. I believe these tales need to be passed on.
While the media often portrays owners in a negative light, using them to promote a negative story or agenda, it is up to you to offer a different narrative. After appearing on the show, any investor, banker, attorney, or other owner you interact with will be able get to know you on a different level.
